Abstract

Neyrpic gates are among the most common flow regulation structures in open channels, valued for their low hydraulic loss and precise discharge control. Pumping stations are also essential for lifting water or feeding secondary networks. Hence, accurate understanding of the two-dimensional flow pattern around these structures is crucial. In the present study, the two-dimensional flow pattern in the combined area of Neyrpic gates and a pumping station located in the main canal of Dasht-e Abbas was simulated and analyzed using the HEC-RAS model. For this purpose, flow depth and discharge data were measured over a period of approximately two years under various operational conditions. Using these data and the HEC-RAS model, modeling was performed for different main canal discharges, lateral diversion discharges, and opening degrees of the downstream radial gates. Finally, a dye tracer injection test was conducted to verify the accuracy of the final model in flow simulation. The results indicated that the modeling has acceptable accuracy. Furthermore, the HEC-RAS model shows higher accuracy in simulating the flow conditions at the location of the off-take gate compared to the canal inlet. The dye tracer investigation also demonstrated a very good agreement between the simulated two-dimensional flow pattern and the actual observed flow. Investigating the effect of eddy viscosity coefficients in the x and y directions and the Smagorinsky coefficient on the flow pattern showed that different values of these coefficients did not significantly affect the flow pattern around the intake of Neyrpic gates and the pumping station intake. Furthermore, the results indicated that the flow pattern near the intakes or pumping stations is highly impressed by deviated discharges.
